Just Know your Cup of Coffee (JKCC) is the farmer’s coffee trading arm of COCEWEFA (Consortium of Central and Western Farmers Association). It sells graded green beans to local and international exporters as well as ground roasted coffee locally, under the JK coffee Brand.
Now operating in over 13 districts and 1200 farmers across Uganda, JKCC was born out of a small family with coffee growing background that saw the need for streamlining and improving coffee markets, stop farmer exploitation by big companies or middle men.
Coffee is the most traded commodity in the world after oil, and its production provides a livelihood for up to 25 million farmers and their families. Ugandan coffee ranks 2nd in Africa and 8th in the world, contributing to over 30% of the country foreign exchange earnings.
The recent decline in world coffee prices has further squeezed coffee producers and thrown a tremendous number of producers below the global extreme poverty line of $1.50 per day.
It is estimated that about 85% of coffee producers in Uganda have intercropped small farms, and sustained low prices hurt even more as coffee producers begin to bear the brunt of climate change.
JKCC identifies value-added markets where Ugandan smallholder farmers can sell their coffee at competitive prices. The company offers advance payments and undertakes post-harvest processes on behalf of the farmers to ensure that the quality of the coffee is not compromised in any way.
It also offers free training to facilitate increased productivity and provision of subsidized agricultural inputs like seedlings to the farmers.
